8 Coastal Summer Camp Adventures Not To Miss

8 Coastal Summer Camp Adventures Not To Miss

Summer on the California Coastside is unlike anywhere else in the Bay Area. While inland cities bake in the heat, Half Moon Bay kids get the ocean, the redwoods, working farms, protected harbors, and miles of open shoreline right outside the front door. For families living here, summer camp is not just childcare. It is an adventure.

But there is something even more special that happens on the Coastside every summer. Kids from different schools, different neighborhoods, and different parts of the coast come together through these programs. The school-year boundaries dissolve. Friendships form across campfires, surfboards, and tide pools. And while the kids are busy exploring, parents are meeting new families too, building connections that make this community stronger year after year.

If you are a Coastside family, or thinking about becoming one, here are the 8 best outdoor summer camps that Half Moon Bay and the surrounding coast have to offer.

Coastal Adventures Summer Camp

kidscoastaladventures.com | (650) 303-4055 | Ages: Elementary | $600/week | 8:30am to 4pm | Based in Princeton

Coastal Adventures is the quintessential Coastside summer camp experience. Every day, campers load up the van and head out to a new destination across the coast and peninsula. The philosophy is simple: kids need to be outside, getting messy, building confidence, and developing a lifelong love of nature.

Four themed weeks run throughout the summer:

Adventure Weeks (June 8, July 6, August 3) explore Butano State Park, Bean Hollow Beach, Golden Gate Park, Coyote Point, and legendary local spots like a secret rope swing. Activities include sand boarding, crabbing, tide pooling, and river boat making.

Beach Weeks (June 15, July 13) visit Pescadero, Venice, San Gregorio, Gazos Creek, and secret local beaches. Ocean safety, boogie boarding, beach games, s'mores, and a beach clean up are all part of the week.

Water Weeks (June 22, July 20) get kids wet at Butano River, Gazos Creek, Bean Hollow, Coyote Point, and Purisima. Creek exploration, tide pooling, squirt guns, and beach days fill the schedule.

Park Weeks (June 29, July 27) tour the best parks on the coast and peninsula including Huddart Park, Frontierland, Golden Gate Park, San Gregorio, and Lands End. Games, swimming, Slip-n-Slides, and boat racing round out the week.

The HEAL Project Summer Camp

thehealproject.org/camps | Ages: 6 to 10 | $575 Session | 8 Sessions | Based in El Granada

The HEAL Project takes kids outside in a different but equally powerful way. Set on a working Coastside farm, HEAL camps connect children ages 6 to 10 with the land, the food it produces, and the agricultural heritage that makes this stretch of coast so unique. HEAL stands for Health, Environment, Agriculture, and Leadership, and every camp day brings all four to life.

Kids get their hands in the soil, learn how food grows, and develop a genuine respect for the environment surrounding them. For families who want their kids to understand not just the ocean but the farms and fields that define the Coastside, HEAL is a natural fit. Visit thehealproject.org/camps for current session dates and registration.

mossbeachranch.com/horse-camp | Ages: 6 to 15 | $600 Session | 10 Sessions | Based in Moss Beach

Moss Beach Ranch Horse Camp gives kids a week-long immersion in riding instruction, vaulting, and horsemanship just minutes from the coast. For ages 6 to 15, this is the kind of camp that turns a curious kid into a confident rider and creates memories that stick for years.

Lazy H Ranch Summer Horse Camp

lazyhhorseranch.com | Ages: 6 to 14 | Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm | Based in Half Moon Bay

Lazy H Ranch is a true Coastside institution. Founded in 1992 by Breen and Emma Hofmann, two Half Moon Bay natives who grew up riding ponies through pumpkin and artichoke fields, the ranch has been sharing a love of horses with local kids for more than three decades. They are now teaching children of their original campers, which says everything you need to know.

Each camper is assigned their own horse or pony to feed, groom, tack up, and ride every day. Kids progress at their own confidence level, working up to trotting and cantering on their own timeline. The week wraps with a horse show on Friday for parents. Camp also includes stable life, arts and crafts, horsemanship, and plenty of outdoor fun with goats, chickens, and the ranch dogs roaming nearby. Extended hours are available if needed.

Visit lazyhhorseranch.com for session dates and registration details.

Pillar Point Surf School Kids Summer Surf Camp

pillarpointsurfschool.com | Ages: 7 to 17 | Monday to Friday, 9am to 12pm | Surfer's Beach, Princeton Jetty

Pillar Point Surf School has been running summer camps for kids in Half Moon Bay since 2015, and the program has earned a loyal following on the Coastside for good reason. The camp focuses on character development through surfing, creating a fun and safe environment while building great surfers both in and out of the water.

Camp covers the fundamentals of ocean knowledge, safety, and etiquette alongside surfing technique, instilling confidence and self-esteem by teaching kids to respect the power of the ocean. Instructors are all CPR and First Aid certified, and students are grouped by age and ability with a 3:1 student to instructor ratio.

Lead instructor Matt Hachey was born and raised in Half Moon Bay with 30 years of surfing experience — this is a program led by people who genuinely know and love this coast. Eight sessions run from June through August. Returning students receive a 10% discount for Summer 2026.

Half Moon Bay Yacht Club Youth Sailing Camp

hmbyc.org/sailing/youth | Ages: 8 to 16 | Open to members and non-members | 8:30am to 3:30pm | One-week sessions all summer

Sailing out of Pillar Point Harbor is an experience that puts the Coastside's geography to work in the best possible way. The Half Moon Bay Yacht Club Youth Sailing Camp is open to kids ages 8 to 16 with no experience required, and runs in the calm, protected waters of the harbor under the supervision of experienced instructors.

The program was recognized by the Pacific Coast Yachting Association as the best youth sailing program on the entire West Coast, and its reputation shows in how quickly sessions fill up. Campers learn basic sailing skills, water safety, how to read the wind, teamwork, and critical thinking as they navigate among other small boats. Beginners start in an Optimist dinghy, with more experienced sailors moving to ILCAs and two-person FJ dinghies.

Sign up early. Boat availability is limited and assigned based on registration order. Full details and session registration are at hmbyc.org/sailing/youth.

Half Moon Bay Junior Lifeguards

parks.ca.gov | Ages: 9 to 15 | Two four-week sessions | Dunes State Beach, Half Moon Bay | (650) 207-5303

Junior Lifeguards is the crown jewel of Coastside summer programs for kids who are ready to take their ocean relationship to the next level. Run by California State Parks at Dunes State Beach, this four-week program for ages 9 to 15 offers one of the most comprehensive outdoor education experiences available anywhere on the California coast.

A typical day starts with stretches and a read of the current ocean conditions, followed by run-swim-runs, buoy swims, boogie boarding, body surfing, beach games, and lifeguard skills lectures covering rescues and first aid. Kids learn to read and navigate the ever-changing Pacific, build physical fitness, and develop leadership and teamwork skills that go far beyond the beach.

The program runs two sessions each summer and demand is high. Spaces are limited and go fast, so early registration is essential. New participants must pass a swim tryout held at the Half Moon Bay High School pool before registering. For families looking for a program that truly grows with a child, Junior Lifeguards feeds into Youth Aide positions for ages 15 to 17, and eventually into seasonal lifeguard careers at Half Moon Bay State Beach.

Register at parks.ca.gov or call (650) 207-5303.

More Than a Camp. A Community.

What makes Coastside summer camps truly special is what happens beyond the activities. Kids who attend different schools, live in different neighborhoods, and might otherwise never cross paths come together over surf lessons, horse stalls, sailboats, and campfires. School-year boundaries disappear. Lasting friendships form.

And the same is true for parents. Drop-off lines and pickup times become chances to meet other Coastside families. The sense of community that defines life here grows a little stronger every summer, one camp week at a time.

This is what it means to raise kids on the coast. And this is why families who move here rarely want to leave.
